Summary : The Version of Think and Grow Rich to Rule Them All! This is one book I always get something new out of with every subsequent reading, even if I only flip to a random page. All you have to do is decide what you want and like so many have discovered, this book will show you the steps to get it. Ross Cornwell’s version restores chunks of texts removed from the 60’s Ballantine paperback (’The Secret’ enthusiasts will be pleased with what they’ll find). This version also provides extensive endnotes to deepen the understanding and appreciation of Dr. Hill’s 20 year research into the science of success. Unlike footnotes in other editions, the endnotes also allow for uninterrupted reading of the main text. Order multiple copies of this one because it’ll wear out from use very quickly and consider any copy you lend out as a gift because I can’t imagine there’s any way they’ll willingly return it back to you. Title : Psycho-cybernetics Author : Maxwell Maltz Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Astonishingly practical and enlightening This book is profoundly good. Do not let the artificial sounding title put you off - it contains chapter after chapter of elegantly written guidance for living. It is evident in the writing that this is the result of not years but decades of observation by Maltz. The chapter on negative emotional habits is in itself worth the money. I bought the book to try to resolve 11 years of tension headaches. After reading teh first chapter, I stopped reading in order to try out some ideas. The headaches are improving, but almost as importantly, I have learnt so much more about myself. Not speculative, extrapolated ideas of the author, but the result of close observations of patients who were councelled before cosmetic surgery. In many cases, the intended facial surgery was canceled, to be replaced by surgery of attitude. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Title : The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens: The Ultimate Teenage Success Guide Author : Sean Covey Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : A truly wicked book… I picked up this book merely because I had heard a lot about the seven habits of highly effective people. I don’t think I really expected to learn anything from it. I guess I was, and still am really, the archetypal know it all teenager who doesn’t need any help with anything. However, this book shows you life strategies that really do work. Some of the things in it are so simple that you wonder why you never thought like that before. This is a great book for teenagers, because we are often probably more likely to listen to a book than to a person. Title : Zero Limits: The Secret Hawaiian System for Wealth, Health, Peace, and More Author : Joe Vitale Rating : 4 Stars out of 5. Summary : Written proof and instruction on how to wipe out all problems easily and enjoyably In this amazing book Joe Vitale describes his encounters with Dr Ihaleakala Hew Len, the Hawaiian psychologist and healer, where they tell us about many different applications of the Hawaiian method Ho’oponopono. These examples cover areas like * violent inmates in a prison hospital who become calm, * a room that needed to be acknowledged before allowing a large dinner party to occupy it or * the innocence of hamburgers because the real enemy is what you think about the food Dr Hew Len teaches that we alone, each one of us, are responsible for everything outside ourselves. Joe describes the steps through the book’s many examples. Many of us would have some difficulty in recognising the situations where we could apply the extremely easy and simple steps to heal the situation by healing ourselves. Joe’s examples make it much easier to recognise where we can use this method. Trusting in gratitude, love and forgiveness enables us to lead healed lives in a healed society. Try it for a few days and you’ll see. Title : Born to Win: Transactional Analysis with Gestalt Experiments Author : Muriel James Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : You Must Have This Book! [...] Even the title conveys a subtle message and indicates an interesting read rather than just ‘How to Network’ which it could have been called. You don’t have to be in Sales or Marketing to read it - I’m not - it explains how some people network badly by being selfish and self promoting and valuable points on networking ‘etiquette’.It helps you not to be a ‘wallflower’ in a room full of strangers - without being over bearing and trying to collect a fistful of business cards. Rather the authors concentrate on the ‘personal’ touches, so, if you are looking for deep rooted theories and phrases to ‘learn’ its not for you.It does indicate the right buttons to push and how to treat people - no matter what their position - in a polite and courteous manner to maximise results.A great read truly reccommended. Title : The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change Author : Stephen R Covey Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Thought-provoking This is a thought-provoking book based on clear principles that can guide us in managing our time. There are many wise ideas contained in the pages of this book. As an example, I learned that efficiency is something that is appropriate with tasks but with people especially family members you can’t be efficient and slot people in as you think best. Instead it is about effectiveness. So you have to give family members the time they need. Another gem is that you can’t balance life at times you have to prioritize according to your values. So a mother (or father) who wants to stay home with their kids when they are young, may need to focus on home instead of career until the kids are older. The goal of balance would be inappropriate for that situation. Mr. Covey also makes it clear the importance of following the compass instead of the clock. This is an excellent book that people need to read because it gives business direction but from a higher perspective that you rarely find in most literature out there. I also recommend the “8th Insight” also by Covey, “Your Erroneous Zones” by Wayne Dyer, “Nexus” by Deborah Morrison Arvind Singh and “Lateral Thinking” by Edward De Bono. All these book offer unique insights. Title : Motivational Interviewing: Preparing People for Change Author : William R. Miller Rating : 3 Stars out of 5. Summary : Short-term benefits Miller and Rollnick have systematised a number of motivational enhancement techniques which have been used, intuitively, by therapists for several decades. In doing so, they have performed a valuable service. As a therapist working with addicted individuals in Cambridge, I have been using the Rollnick-Miller synthesis of MI for some years now - in conjunction with ‘cycle of change’ methodology. The following are my principal observations. Through the use of these MI techniques, I have had some success in helping clients to move from the ‘pre-contemplation’ stage of the cycle of change to the stage of ‘contemplation’. Sessions and strategies of Motivational Interviewing have also proved useful in expediting progress from contemplation, through preparation, to action. I have found, however, that there are three main problems with Motivational Interviewing. Firstly, it has proved relatively ineffective unless repeatedly reinforced and combined with other therapeutic interventions. Secondly the benefits thus gained take a long period of time to become evident. Thirdly these benefits are often of short duration. In its application to addiction, MI does not seem to reduce significantly the incidence of relapse. For these reasons, I now use MI only in the initial stages of therapy. Thereafter, in order to help clients to maintain recovery, I have reverted to the use of more prescriptive techniques - in particular, CBT and Twelve-Step Facilitation. ‘Motivational Interviewing’ is a very expensive book for the slender results that it yields. Borrow it from a public library, if you can. Then decide if you think it’s worth buying. Title : The Richest Man in Babylon Author : George S. Clason Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Every teenager should be given this book at school. With personal debt at it’s highest ever level this book should be given to every child before they leave school and enter into the financial mine field and every adult should buy it. It is so simple to read, no jargon or complicated investment ideas, just good old common sense advice (which isn’t common!). The best ever financial book you could buy.
